2009 Rewind

zzzppliipllblipzpzi....ahh the sound of the now ancient rewind button on VHS.

So 2009. Honestly, this year has kinda been a blur. I was pregnant for a third of it. I was in new mommy blur for the next third. And for this last third? Well, I'm not sure where it went. I'm not even sure it came for that matter!

So what has this year held? A lot of precious blessings! Like this little bundle of joy.

And like watching him go from a squirmy little 7# newborn into an 18# crawling, getting into everything, baby.

And like lots of precious moments watching this one develop into a "big" girl (with hair).

Physical growth is something that is tangible. It's something that only needs to be observed by the human eye. It's something that, when your children are little like mine are, is amazing to go back and look at. But growth happens to everyone.

Spiritual growth is a little harder to detect. It's something that an idivudual has to purposefully work to achieve....and to maintain. And it's something that the outsider can recognize, but it's harder to see. You can look back on the past days and months and and know that some growth has occured, but you are unsure as how to accurately measure that. It's like the life of a plant. You must first plant a seed. Then you water and nourish that small seed. Just when you wonder if that seed will sprout, surely and steadily you see a green bud. Then a stem. And finally a beautiful flower. But that process, though it might only take a few weeks, is entirely different when spoken in terms of spiritual growth. It's a slow process. One that takes diligence. One that takes patience. But one that will payoff in the end when we are before our Father giving Him the glory He very much deserves.

So what has this year been to me? What are my highlights?

*First off, the biggest highlight of the year was the birth of our precious son, Ethan.
*Watching our baby girl grow out of "babyhood", into toddlerhood, and closer to childhood. She has learned to run, jump, and climb. She has learned to go from speaking in two word sentences to talking in full paragraphs. She has gone from a toddler bed to a big girl twin bed. She has gone from diapers to big girl underwear. Those moments are priceless.
*Darin and I were married 5 wonderful years on January 3rd of last year...in a few days, we will have reached 6!

Those are all my tangible highlights. Below are some of my more personal, spiritual highlights.

*I made a goal last year to read the Bible all the way through by today. I met that goal just 90 minutes ago, just 9 hours and 30 minutes before the end of the 2009 year. That makes me proud. It was a tough goal, and I didn't necessarily do it the way it should have been done...we had a baby in the middle of the year, remember? But I did it. I learned a lot (not nearly as much as I could have because I did it so fast). But most importantly, I felt the presence of God through many of those reading sessions...not so much in the begats, or the plagues, or even the laws in the old testament. But He was there teaching and instructing me...pointing out things that I need to hide in my heart and keep close.
*Perhaps my biggest spiritual growth comes in the form of leadership, and of stepping completely out of my comfort zone to serve in that way. Last January, the Lord pricked my heart. Ok, He more like shoved me off my rear end...but you know... Our church was without a women's minister...and a women's ministry for that matter. His instruction to me was clear that I was to build that ministry...to recruit leaders to help me, and to lead that ministry. Plain ole little me? Yeah, that's what I said too. But as I pondered this new opportunity, I thought about the times in the last few years where He allowed me to be in charge...just of small things. But those small things helped train me to be a leader in big things. That ministry kicked off in June of this last year. It's struggling. But it's still new. I expected people to go from not being involved in anything to be involved in everything. I got excited and went away from where God wanted it to go, I think. And that alone led to the unsuccessful start. So we're taking a new direction. That will kick off again sometime soon! Plans are in place, leaders are being put in place, and I feel like I've allowed the Lord to direct me every step this time. So pray for that, please. I'm still out of my element. Little me...the women's ministry director. Still blows my mind that the Lord thought I could do something like that...but that alone spurs me on. HE thought I could do it. So do it I will.

Those are my highlights. Now, tomorrow we enter not only into a new year, but a new decade. Ten years ago, we had not only the turn of a new year, or even a new decade, but we had the turn of a new century. I can only hope and pray that the things I've accomplished in this last decade will multiply in this coming decade. May God clearly show his guidance and continue to show His faithfulness to us in the coming years.

..But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)

Batter up!

So this was one of the gifts for Zoe (and Ethan) for Christmas. It's really kind of neat. It's a three stage batting practice thing. Stage 1 is a normal toddler sized tee. Stage two is where you can turn on the ball machine to have the balls pop straight up. And stage three is a setting that has balls pitched to you from a few feet away. She LOVES balls and has a ton of energy. Seemed like a good option to us. They had either pink and purple or blue and yellow. We chose the latter so that Ethan could use it in a couple of years - not that he couldn't use a pink one, but you know...

I bundled her up in her snow bib and jumbo sized coat since it was in the 30's and let her go to town. She's got a pretty natural swing if I do say so myself. Can you tell I hope to be a softball mom one day?? Don't worry...I'd never force her to play, I just hope she does. I love the sport and have played church league and intramurel softball for years. :-)

And she gets a homerun!!!!

Oh - and remember this picture? I posted it the other night. This was Darin's moment of being indoctrinated into late night gift assemblyhood. He was thrilled, let me tell you.

So anyway, this was the finished product. Zoe's all about riding toys, so this was a great gift selection from her Aunt Julie.

I'm (not) Dreaming of a White Christmas - part deux

So since I was in a lazy mood yesterday, I wrote a post with no pictures. Here are those promised pictures to go along with that post...and a few videos to go along with them. To read the story, see the post below this one.

These pictures are in no particular order. I'm lazy, remember? It's too much of a hassel going through and organizing pictures on this thing this late at night.

This would be my mother who could hardly contain her excitement at the gift she ended up with during the Chinese Christmas gift exchange...a fishing photo frame. :)

Cheesy grin...snuggling with Granddad.

Look, mommy, it's snowing...in Dallas!

Ooohhhh...pretty!

Proof...a white Christmas.

What's this?

This would be a picture of our van just prior to unloading. I think another bag or two might have fit ok, don't you?
(NOTE - I know it looks bad having a dog below a pile of stuff. He had plenty of ventilation and was really quite cozy and happy in there. Just look at that face!)

And last but not least...

Welcome to the world of assembly, Daddy! Ha!

And a few videos to leave you with.

I'm (not) Dreaming of a White Christmas....

You know those years that you rush out of bed, perhaps even before you run out to see the loot under the Christmas tree, to see if it's going to be a white Christmas? Maybe not, depending on where you grew up. But if you were like me, you dreamed, hoped, and sometimes even prayed for a White Christmas...just one. You see, growing up in Dallas, we MAYBE saw one snowfall a year, and that might accumulate to a grand total of 1/10th of an inch. We got ice most of the time if we got anything at all. I think the one snowman I ever made there was about 6 inches tall...ha! And growing up in Dallas, I also watched the madhouse that erupted every time a snowflake would fall from the sky. An all out panic. Literally. It was like people were rushing to go buy snow tires afraid that we'd have a blizzard. And inevitably, you'd have the morons that thought that as a thin layer of ice froze on the roadways it was still ok to weave in and out of traffic speeding 20 mph over the speed limit. And then you have ice skating...in cars.

So let that image soak into your mind for a minute. I'll come back to that in a bit.

On Tuesday, my family left our home in Arkadelphia to go to my family's house in Dallas. We left Tuesday for a few reasons. #1 - we were trying to leave ahead of the monster storm that was approaching the next day and sticking around for another day or two after that. We didn't want to have to float to Dallas. We preferred the traditional driving. And #2 - I was doing 75% of the cooking and didn't want to arrive on Wednesday afternoon only to turn around and go to the store and have to begin that night. So Tuesday afternoon we got there about 6ish and headed to dinner with my parents. Since my kids were already off schedule from napping in an uncomfortable car seat, CiCi's made a great option for two cranky kids and two hungry and getting cranky parents.

Wednesday, I made my food list, shopped, baked, and cooked up a storm. Ethan was unusually fussy, wouldn't sleep, wouldn't nurse. He's been on three rounds of antibiotics for ear infections (two of them double) in the last month. We figured he was getting another, but since we had been the doctor just two days before getting them checked as we finished the last round of meds, we gave it another day or so.

Thursday...Christmas Eve. Now...re-enter first scenario. Remember that one? White Christmas? Yeah - well that happened. And all that about the driving and panicking? Yeah - that happened too. Weatherman? WRONG! Supposed to be a clear day, cold, but clear and sunny. Umm...not so much. Rain all morning. 11AM, I'm finishing up cooking, look outside and realize there are snowflakes coming down. Awesome! Until, that is, you turn to the weather channel and realize this is the first of hours and hours of snowfall and ice. At this point, nothing was sticking. BUT - temps were dropping, fast and were supposed to be well below freezing by evening. Snow was coming down - harder and harder. Winds were blowing - like 50mph wind gusts. Ever seen swirling snow? Yeah, I hadn't either. The excitement of snow on Christmas eve quickly died when all plans were cancelled. Sigh. Snow, on Christmas, in Dallas...really? I have to admit, I had a really bad attitude about the whole thing. I know, I know, shame on me. But I was so bummed out.

You see - two years ago when Zoe was 5 months old, she got the stomach bug. We discovered this about halfway there when she threw up in the car several times. I got it that night. My brother got it the next day. Then my mom. Then my husband...and on and on and on. So needless to say, that Christmas, we tossed our cookies instead of eating them...if you catch my drift. No festivities, no church service, no food, no family visits, nothing but frequent trips to hug the pearly white toilet. I am always worried about that repeating itself. But snow?? Never once crossed my mind. Turns out, the streets were really icy. Bridges were awful. And with everyone coming to us from 20+ miles away, they were bound to cross their fair share of bridges and be on the same roadways with those same morons who think they can still go the same speed they would normally. Thankfully, they thought best not to come that night. I was SO disappointed to say the least. I could have cared less about the food...I just wanted to see everyone since we only see them all once a year. But...temps rose just enough the next day that everything was just pushed back a day. Mom's side of the family came Christmas day night. Dad's side came the following day. So all was well. We saw everyone....ate too much...opened gifts...sang Happy Birthday to Jesus, etc etc etc. And in addition to all that...we PLAYED IN THE SNOW! There were a couple of inches on the ground by morning. Not good packing snow, though, so no snowman. A few nearby locations got as much as 9''. NUTS, I'll tell you!

So I guess I just thought I wanted a white Christmas...till I got one. It was kinda neat, though. Zoe, Ethan, and I had our first white Christmas all in the same year. Ethan was lucky enough to have his first white Christmas and his first Christmas all in the same year. And Dallas had it's first white Christmas since 1923. Arkadelphia on the other hand had something like 6 inches of rain and I heard that the community joined together to build an ark for Christmas. (Just kidding...well, about the ark part at least). Apparently, flooding was so bad that part of a major interstate was shut down as well as many roadways. Not sorry I missed that.

Unfortunately, by Thursday, Ethan had a full blown ear infection again. Not sure why he keeps getting them. We're on antibiotics again...fourth round in less than two months. Poor kid. Combine that with getting ever closer to cutting his first tooth, and being in a pack'n'play to sleep in instead of a cozy, big crib, and you've got a C.R.A.N.K.Y boy on your hands. And for some reason, Zoe thought she would show out the entire time we were there. I'm not sure why. Little stink! She was constantly getting into trouble, not the innocent kind...pure defiance. And had an attitude like nothing else! Two going on twelve.

So let me just tell you...the amount of stuff we brought back was...well let's just say that the back end of the van was filled to the very top. The.Very.Top. Three fourths of it made noise. Ahem. Just sayin'!

So it's Sunday now. We're back home. We had our gift opening tonight with the kids. Zoe got her first dollhouse and a furniture set to go inside and Ethan got a Stack'n'Action Choo Choo Train. At this point, we only get them one or two things a piece. Next year, probably, we'll begin to do the three or four gifts things (leading into the Christmas story with the three gifts from the wise men). We've decided to do the following...

Something you want
Something you need
Something to play with
And something to read

With the something to play with, when they get a little older, we'll give them each $20 or so a piece, take them to walmart or toys'r'us or something like that and let them pick out a family game to play for game nights. As they get older and want things like a Wii or big game system like that, we'll "combine" $$ and get those things that way.

So I'm really lazy right now. Partly because it's 10:45PM, and partly because pictures always upload opposite of the way you click them, so I have to think backwards and I'm too tired to do that right now. And partly because I'm distracted and getting a kick out of watching my poor husband try to put together a quad rider (mini four wheeler) Anyway, I'll do a separate post tomorrow with pictures...and a few videos maybe. Make sure to watch the one with the snow...it's amazing how hard that snow came down.

FINALLY!

Mommy - "Zoe...Ethan...look at the camera and SMIIILE BIG!"

Ethan - "Why is she screaming like that? She just went nuts on us!"

Zoe - "Something about it being the first time both of us have looked at the camera AND smiled for the first time....or something like that. Who knows!"

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE BUSCHERS!
