Yes, we saw lots of those today. Our happy man turned sad for a few minutes. You would too if you got stuck in the leg three times without being warned.
Our two month checkup was today. He's a healthy, growing baby boy.
Stats:
Height - 23.75 inches (90th percentile)
Weight - 12.9 lbs (75th percentile)
Head Circumference - 15 inches (25th percentile)
Translation: Giant chunky monkey with a small head. :-)
In other news:
So he has this itty bitty red mark on the top of his head. It's like the size of the tip of a really dull pencil. So not very big. But it's bright red, almost like a small blood blister. I asked about it at our appointment today and found out that it's called a hemangioma. So...anything ending with "oma" doesn't sound good. But it's really no big deal. It's a collection of cells in a particular spot on his body - in this case, his head. It's actually a type of infantile tumor - but not the type of tumor that is cancerous. It's totally harmless and non cancerous....good news to hear from a cancer survivor. The only negative thing is that it'll get bigger...possibly much bigger. You've probably seen a few kiddos in your lifetime who have these big purple or redish birthmarks on their faces. Yeah, that's it. BUT - there's three good things in this.
#1 - Since he's had it at birth or very soon thereafter, it hasn't grown much at all, and it does most or all of it's growing w/in the first 6 months - a year and then slowly shrinks until it disappears altogether. By school age, it should be mostly or completely gone.
#2 - it's on top of his head about an inch away from his hairline, so as soon as his hair comes in, it probably won't show much.
#3- and probably the best thing is that it's not at all harmful to him.
I must admit that I am a little concerned about how big it will get...only because I know how mean people can be. There are people out there who won't hesitate to just stare at him or comment about it in front of him, and I don't want him being teased about it from other kids. Hopefully it's grown slowly enough that it won't get too large, and if it does, maybe the hair will hide it. Time will tell...
But overall - God is good! We have two wonderful healthy children!! That's all a mother could ask for.
Sam was 90th for length, 90th for weight, and less than 3rd for his head. Dr. Rucker always said "At least he's on the chart!"
ReplyDeleteTom, my little chunky monkey too has a hemangioma also on the top of his head, it's just a little past the center of his head. It showed up about a week after his birth I think. It did get slightly bigger, it's bumpy and ugly, but it's on his head. I'm happy about that!
ReplyDeleteHe was born with a huge head of dark hair so it was pretty well hidden, but now at 3 months he's lost some of it so you can see his "strawberry" pretty well.
His doctor said, it's not a big deal, it will look much uglier before it looks better. I'm patiently waiting for the better part. :)

What a healthy boy! My sister had a hemangioma about the size of a nickel on her arm when she was young. By the time she was growing out of her toddler years it went away. We always said it was the spot where the angels kissed her! I'm sure Ethan's will go away too fairly soon too. Glad that all is well with your little man!
