New Baby Exhaustion - Without the New Baby

So my last post I mentioned that we were in the process of changing beds.  Yeah - so that didn't go so smoothly.  We've had a ROUGH two weeks.  Every night, I pray and hope that things will get back to normal, or at least slow steps in the right direction...but every night seems to be worse in its own ways.

So here's what the last month has held for us.  Four weeks ago, Ethan had an ear infection which got his sleep schedule off a little bit.  The same week, the canine teeth started to move down, creating the puffy gums on two different teeth.  That got him off even more.  The following weekend, my little brother got married, so we traveled to Dallas - which equaled two late nights for Ethan and lots and lots of busy days.  That got him off even further.  The week after we got back is when he decided he was done with his crib.  He would kick wildly and get frustrated at the lack of space.  That was fun...for lack of a nice word.  So we moved him to the toddler bed - same amount of space but without the restriction of bars.  No help.  So we moved him to the twin bed.  Apparently it was too different, so he just didn't want to sleep in it.  Epic fail!
So this now brings us to two weeks ago.  At this time, he starts crying for up to two hours after putting him to bed, and would wake up for several hours on end anywhere from 2-5AM.  He may or may not have ever gone back to sleep.  Then we found out he had pinworms...tiny little worms that apparently are highly contagious and make their home in your little hiney.  Yeah - so that sounds comfy!  Symptoms?  Itchiness, restless sleep, and insomnia.  Guess when these little boogers come out and start rooting around your bootie hole, laying eggs and just moving around?  Yep - night time when you are trying to sleep.  So we treated them.  By this time, though, he was so far off his schedule that his little system just didn't know what to do and when to sleep. He was no longer secure in his room because he'd lost the security of his crib, so he needed us right there with him to fall asleep...which we would sit and do, but then anytime he woke up in the night and didn't see mom or dad, it would all start over. So we called the doc and they gave us some kind of antihistamine that was supposed to knock them out.  For a select few, it had the opposite effect.  We thought, surely Ethan won't be one of these select few.  We thought wrong.  It totally kept him awake.  So we started melatonin - a natural medicine that is just a sleep booster.  Melatonin is something your body produces naturally.  That seemed to do the trick with making him tired, but he would then wake up at 2 or 3 and seem to be done sleeping.  The worst night by far that we had was probably last night when he was awake (not crying, just awake) until 10:30, asleep until 2, and then up until about 6.  Translation - mom and dad who are exhausted by this point can't go to sleep until 10:30, and were up from 2 until 6.  Better translation - we feel like new parents, but without the new baby.

So please, please, please pray for us.  This has gone on for a month now and we're ready to have our happy, healthy little boy back...one who will actually sleep...and one who will let his parents sleep.
